Rijksmuseum
The national museum of the Netherlands showcasing Dutch Golden Age masterpieces

đ Elena's Experience
The Rijksmuseum is absolutely magnificent - from the stunning Gothic Revival building itself to the incredible treasures inside. I arrived at 9 AM and walked through the beautiful arcade that connects Museumplein to the city center. The grand entrance hall immediately takes your breath away with its soaring ceilings and ornate decorations.
The Gallery of Honor is the museum's centerpiece, leading you through Dutch masterpieces chronologically. But nothing prepares you for the moment you enter the room with Rembrandt's Night Watch. This massive painting is displayed in its own specially designed space, and it's absolutely mesmerizing. I sat on the bench for 20 minutes just absorbing the incredible detail and composition. The recent restoration has made it even more spectacular - you can see details that were hidden for centuries.
Beyond the paintings, I was fascinated by the decorative arts sections. The Delftware collection is stunning, with entire rooms of blue and white pottery. The Asian Pavilion houses an incredible collection of Asian art spanning centuries. I particularly loved the dollhouses - meticulously detailed miniature houses from the 17th and 18th centuries that offer a glimpse into daily life of wealthy Dutch families.
The museum library is a hidden gem - a beautiful reading room that feels like stepping back in time. I also spent time in the special exhibition on Dutch maritime history, which was incredibly well done. The museum does an excellent job of combining art with historical context, helping you understand the Golden Age of Dutch prosperity and exploration.
Don't miss the stunning gardens in the courtyard - they're free to access and a perfect spot for a break. The museum restaurant is excellent (though pricey), or you can bring a picnic to enjoy in the gardens. With 80 galleries, you could easily spend a full day here. I'd recommend at least 4 hours to see the highlights properly.
